CTED 833 - Personal Fitness for Teachers: Body Toning In All Ways (K-12)© NEW!

In order to achieve a healthy life style and operate at the maximum both mentally and physically, one must understand and implement conditioning and nutritional programs that are conductive to the maintenance of a proper level of personal fitness. To assist students in their efforts to reach recommended standards of fitness, this course will provide in-depth consideration of topics such as strength, weight training, conditioning, flexibility, endurance, nutrition and proper heart rate and weight.
During the course, guided practice sessions will be assigned on readings, handout instructions and the sharing of student experiences, ideas and activities.
Upon completion the course, each student will be in possession of a comprehensive nutritional and conditioning plan of action, which if systematically incorporated into their life style, will result in their full fitness potential.

This three credit continuing education graduate course is designed to provide teachers with the basics for introducing the "Six Traits" method of writing to students in the participants’ professional setting. Teachers will learn the definitions and characteristics of each of the traits and will be able to incorporate lessons into their classrooms, introducing, through literature, the traits to their students. Teachers will collaborate with their peers in the course to create resource lists of picture books that highlight each of the traits and will conduct a mini unit lesson using at least one book from each list to the end that participants will know and understand how to easily implement same in their professional setting. Upper elementary (3-5), middle, and high school teachers will begin to assess the student’s writing through these six traits. Lower elementary teachers (K-2) will focus on vocabulary development and understanding of the traits. Lots of ideas, materials, activities and strategies will be shared, analyzed and evaluated.

CTED 566 - A Comprehensive Focus on Children’s Literature and Reading Strategies (K-8)©

This 3 credit continuing graduate course is intended to provide teachers with access to the latest and best literature for K-8 students and the expertise on how to use this knowledge wisely in the classroom. Participants will administer and assess a reading questionnaire asking their students how they define "Good Reading". They will use that information along with information gained from reading several comprehension articles and professional resources to create an action plan to be used in their classroom. Participants will also study comprehension strategies to use in the classroom to improve student learning. Ready-made lists from a variety of sources will be compiled to determine what experts believe are outstanding pieces of literature. Book lists and book recommendations will be created and shared with all participants in this course. The expected outcome will be enhanced knowledge, understanding and the ability to use literature in a better way to improve achievement scores. Lots of fresh ideas, materials, activities and strategies will help participants achieve this outcome.

CTED 553 - Authors’ Studies: Survey of Literature for Classroom Teacher (K-12)©

This three credit graduate course provides teachers with an opportunity to broaden their own knowledge of literature genres and titles to accompany each. Teachers will be reading self-selected literature for their own enjoyment, as well as compiling a list of their most important classroom reads. Surveys of teachers will be conducted to ascertain what books they believe are especially important to read for self growth, or at a particular grade level or content area like Art, English and Physical Education. Lists from classmates can be compiled as a comprehensive resource for later use. Participants will also review a wide selection of favorite authors and read a limited selection in order to recommend to others. The final product will be an extensive list of literature and recommended authors that can be used by all teachers to reinforce the theory that everyone is a reader and reading teacher.

Love and Logic® was developed from the work of Jim Fay and Foster Clinic and has the orientation that classroom management, discipline, and academic achievement is greatly influenced by the degree of positive relationship between adults and students. This course will specifically examine characteristics of dealing with behavior problems, internalizing control, and avoiding power struggles that negatively impact on both student performance and teaching efficiency. The principles of Love and Logic® will be applied to such aspects of education as grading, differentiation of instruction, and special education.

This three credit continuing education graduate course provides participants an opportunity to study Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences and related recent brain research. Participants then may apply that body of knowledge to improving their instructional practices. As many as 95% of the students we label as "at risk" are body-kinesthetic learners. They can learn anything we want them to know if we teach to their strengths and intelligences. Learn how to improve your teaching based on recent brain research findings and how to adapt your teaching to the students’ multiple intelligence. The intended outcome of the course is for participants to be able to identify the best learning style for all students and then be able to translate these findings into the most effective teaching strategies for each learner. Plenty of ideas, materials, activities and strategies will be presented and processed.

This three credit continuing education graduate course will give you practical ideas for overcoming risks and building strengths into your classroom and teaching methodology. By practicing the strategies covered in this class, teachers can recognize and foster growth of student’s protective factors and developmental assets so their students can successfully adapt in the face of adversity while developing social and academic competence. Current researched-based theories and concepts of excellent positive youth development and resiliency techniques will be review as well as related broad based learning strategies related to this concept. The intended result will be a teacher who is more knowledgeable and understanding of the qualities of positive youth development and better prepared with ideas, materials, activities and strategies that will lead to happier, healthier and more successful youth.
