CTED 5020 - If They're Laughing They're Listening/Using Humor and Creativity in the Classroom (K-12)©
Course Description: This class will provide strategies and methodologies for increasing student achievement by using humor, drama and other novel approaches in the classroom. Students will learn to employ imagination and creativity when designing lesson plans, diffusing volatile situations, and motivating students. Research literature is replete with evidence of the benefits of humor including but not limited to; decreased anxiety and stress, improved self-esteem, increased motivation and promotes divergent thinking. Evidence suggests that using techniques for teaching content creatively not only enables learning but demonstrates a correlation between mastery of material and positive response to instructional stimuli. Students will learn that humor, laughter, music and drama are potentially powerful strategies that can be planned into instruction to facilitate learning and achieve specific learning outcomes. They will learn how to make their classroom an exciting and engaging environment for learning by exploring and studying how to modify activities, assignments and tests that incorporate using differing strategies to increase retention.
