Kids In Crisis I CTED 509
Course Description:This three (3) hour continuing education graduate course is designed to take a look at the increasing deviant student behavior within our classrooms and schools. It will look at boys and girls in crisis stemming from anxiety, eating disorders, student gangs, broken families and violence, and further, provide options of how to provide a positive responsive school environment in such times of individual and group crises. As a result, the outcome of taking the course will be the mastery of skills intended to decrease violence, bullying and disorders which lead to student eating disorders, isolation and taunting. Strategies and activities shared will increase empathy and foster a nurturing environment to develop a better knowledge of right from wannabees as well as hearing the cries from boys. Participants become aware of how to spot cliques, decrease gossiping and how to defuse violent situations, as well as how best to identify potential crises in individual students they increasingly confront. Lots of ideas, materials, strategies and activities will be modeled, shared and evaluated.

Brian Based Teaching and Learning CTED 511
Course Description:This three (3) semester hour continuing education graduate course will focus on the latest research on the Brain and its implications for instruction in your classroom, K-12. The intent of the course is to educate classroom teachers in appropriate learning strategies based on this research and its implications. Basic concepts related to Brain-based learning will be explored in detail. The outcome of taking this course will be that student achievement gains will be realized based on the implementation of these new and revised practices. Ideas, materials, strategies and activities will be presented for immediate classroom use along with assessment tools to measure their effectiveness.

Moral Intelligence II: Character Education With a New Twist CTED 513
Course Description:This continuing education on-line graduate course is designed to give teachers, guidance counselors and administrators the skills necessary to incorporate, cultivate and develop morality education within any given curriculum in a public school setting. The course focus includes how to specifically impart the seven essential virtues, why they are needed and how they are taught as well as an understanding of the crucial role teachers play in strengthening the conscience and guiding behavior. Course Description:This course has been carefully designed to provide the background, principles, theory and research related to a competitive school and classroom environment to the end that participants will not only learn the stated objectives for the course, but be well prepared to implement the program strategies related thereto. Cooperative learning models of Johnson, Pino and Slavin will be compared, analyzed and evaluated in terms of the spirit of healthy student competition. The best features of each will be identified, and students will develop their own model in their Plan of Action and sample Mini Unit design. A bundle of ideas, materials, activities and strategies will be presented from which participants can fashion their own program.

The "Write" Way to Get the Grants CTED 520
Course Description:This course is designed to provide the information needed to write complete grant proposals successfully. Participants will learn to create a mission statement, problem statement, an appropriate title, and the other necessary requirements of a grant proposal. Participants will also learn the terminology, and will identify formats that are appropriate and most effective for corporate, foundation and government grant proposals and which address the specific project of each participant. Topics include: formatting, effective language, methods of research, identifying resources, collecting information, terminology, and personal interviews and how to get them. A hands-on method will allow the participants to achieve the intended course outcome to leave the class with a written grant proposal. The instructors will teach the difference between corporate, foundation and government grants and how to find the funding sources that are most appropriate for the specific project. Participants will be actively involved in the discussion of topics and will discover how to tailor the proposal for each funding source using various formats and appropriate language. Participants will receive Grant Proposal Manual plus many additional handouts including examples of foundation, corporate and government grants. Each participant will develop and write a proposal for their own individual idea and project. Class information will be targeted to educators and education projects, although material is appropriate for all who wish to write a grant proposal.

Artists' Depictions of Peace and War CTED 530
Course Description:This three (3) semester hour continuing education graduate course is intended to introduce classroom teachers to artists' depictions of peace and war from the American Revolution to the Gulf War and the invasion of Iraq. This will give participants the information necessary for developing a curriculum covering the history in our times of peace and war for their students. Our nation's art forms in times of peace and war will be discussed using lecture, slides, power point and DVD clips. Teaching methods include: lecture, cooperative learning activities, as well as ongoing reflection. Lot of ideas, materials, strategies and activities will be shared and evaluated.

Children’s Literature Studies: Expanded "Readers, Workshop" CTED 536
Course Description: This course provides teachers with an opportunity to expand the materials they are familiar with in their classroom collections for the purpose of teaching a "Reader's Workshop." Teachers will broaden their knowledge of literature genres and titles to accompany each that are appropriate for the age level they are currently teaching. Teachers will be reading self-selected literature driven by their classroom needs, as well as compiling a list of their most important classroom needs. A survey of teachers will be conducted to ascertain what books they believe are especially important to read at a particular grade level, as well as for a given content area like Art, English and Physical Education. Lists from classmates will be complied to determine what experts believe fit into these categories and as a comprehensive resource for later use. Participants will also review a wide selection of favorite authors as well as read a limited selection in order to recommend others become familiar with the books on their list. Pop Art: 1960's America CTED 547
Course Description:This three (3) semester credit continuing education graduate course has been designed to introduce the teachers to the art of 1960's America. Pop Art embraced the common and everyday popular images of America. A painting of a Campbell's soup can or Coca Cola bottle became a piece of fine art to be displayed in an art museum as well as in an advertisement. Who are these artists? Why did they create this art movement? This course will explore the history of the Pop Art Movement.

Sculpture: In the Community and Classroom CTED 540
Course Description: This three-hour continuing education graduate course will convey new light on one of the oldest forms of art known to man. Students taking this course will become familiar with a variety of sculptural forms from world famous to local artists identified through field trips within our community. Teachers will gain a new appreciation of sculpture, becoming familiar with its many genre forms, modes of construction and "hands on are" creative art processes. This course will incorporate the academic subjects of math, science, social studies and language arts thus enhancing teacher's abilities to connect sculpture to t heir classroom curriculum. "You've Got Male/Helping Boys Succeed In School" CTED 541
Course Description:This class will provide strategies and methodologies for setting up school environments to teach boys successfully. You will review the latest research about the male brain, as well as study new techniques for helping boys’ minds grow and learn. The focus of the class is on providing practical help for teachers in adapting the classroom environment to fit the male learning style. Currently, more boys than girls in the classroom chronically under-perform, receive a disproportionate number of lower grades, are vastly overrepresented in special education, and score more poorly on state tests. They particularly score the lowest in reading, writing, and language arts. Students in this class will address the reasons for the aforementioned, as well as ways to reverse this trend in schools by discovering strategies to keep them actively engaged in classroom activities, finding techniques for increasing their commitment to school success, and developing tools for helping them deal with the unique social and emotional problems they face in school. Course Description:This graduate course is intended to show classroom teachers how to empower students to become more responsible for their own learning. This course will help participants learn the skills necessary for developing and empowering their students as teachers and measuring their growth as a result. A close review of the research by Goodlad, Glaser, Bloom and others will be made to support the methods advocated. Course Description:This online class is designed to provide teachers with access to the latest and best literature for K-12 teachers. Multi Cultural Classroom Activities CTED 631
Course Description:This is a fast paced, hands-on learning experience where students will become aware of and appreciate the differences and similarities of the multi cultural students that are entering their classrooms. During the class, students will learn how to set up a working kitchen lab in their classroom, use food as a springboard to generate excitement for learning about the world around them, and use many undiscovered community resources. Classes are limited to thirty students per session and there will be a $75 fee for materials, banquet and field trip.

Course Description:This three-credit continuing education graduate course provides classroom teachers with a variety of motivational activities specifically addressing each of Gardner's eight established multiple intelligences in several academic areas. Course Description:This continuing education graduate course, addresses the current issue of how to best address the plethora of needs of minorities within the educational setting. In order to better educate, it is necessary to eradicate the prejudice and stereotypes that breed ineffective education. Course Description: This continuing education graduate course is designed to provide teachers with the basics for introducing the "Six Traits" method of writing to students in the participants' professional setting. Teachers will learn the definitions and characteristics of each of the traits and will be able to incorporate lessons into their classrooms, introducing, through literature, the traits to their students. Teachers will collaborate with their peers in the course to create resource lists of picture books that highlight each of the traits and will conduct a mini unit lesson using at least one book from each list to the end that participants will know and understand how to easily implement same in their professional setting. Upper elementary (3-5), middle, and high school teachers will begin to encourage their students to focus on a particular trait during a writing assignment and will begin to assess the student's writing through these six traits. The Holocaust CTED 931
Course Description:This three credit continuing education graduate course is intended to provide broad based knowledge and introduce teachers to the tragedy of the attempted, systematic elimination of European Jews during World War II. The examination of the Holocaust is an important event to teach students because it marks a period in history in which the first systematic or planned killing of an entire cultural or racial group of people takes place. The course will also stress the proper methodology that teachers should use in teaching this content. This course will present the Holocaust as history with the use of literature, audio-visual materials, moral dilemmas, and lesson plans with handouts for use in the classroom. The projected outcome is to provide classroom teachers with the knowledge, understanding and methodologies needed to help students learn about the Holocaust. Many new ideas, materials, strategies and activities will be presented, analyzed and evaluated.

The Great American West CTED 933
Course Description:This course is intended to provide broad-based knowledge of the course topic as well as how participants can best transmit this knowledge to students in their classrooms. This course will examine cultural, ethnic, economic, environmental, scientific, industrial, political and historical perspectives in order to strengthen student knowledge and understanding of American history. The course pedagogy will present the Great American West through the use of literature, power point presentations, small group sharing, and audio-visual materials, and will provide teachers with project ideas, lesson plans and a variety of primary and secondary source handouts for future use in the classroom. The projected outcome is to provide classroom teachers with the knowledge, understanding and methodologies needed to help students learn more about American history. Many new ideas, materials, strategies and activities will be provided as part of the course methodology.

Leadership: Educators Working Together CTED 971
Course Description:Effective school leadership results in improved student performance. School leadership thrives when it is shared by administrators, support staff and classroom teachers. Participants in the course will learn how administrators, support staff and classroom teachers can all play a positive role in school leadership. Activities to foster high-level communication and encourage educators to become leaders will be incorporated. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the qualities of effective leaders.

Wellness XII: A Framework for Providing a Safe and Healthy Learning Environment CTED 972
Course Description:Children and educators perform best in schools where there is a safe and healthy learning environment. There are proven district-wide and school level programs that enhance school safety. Nationwide initiatives encourage educators to pay attention to the health of the whole child. Safety needs both physical and emotional must be addressed. This course will explore the essential components of safe and healthy schools as well as methods to develop and maintain positive school culture and climate. Proven strategies that will be explored include developing a comprehensive school safety and prevention plan; addressing the social and academic developmental needs of students; incorporating peer programs; and, teaching healthy stress management and coping techniques. Course methodology will include a review of relevant research, lecture, presentations by current experts in the field, group interaction, and personal reflection.
